THIS WEBSITE IS NO LONGER MAINTAINED. FOR CURRENT RESULTS, SEE THE WILSON SURNAME PROJECT HOSTED AT FAMILY TREE DNA. USE THIS LINK TO GO THERE. THIS PAGE REMAINS AVAILABLE BECAUSE IT CONTAINS INFORMATION ABOUT EARLIEST KNOWN ANCESTORS FOR SOME PROJECT MEMBERS THAT IS NOT EASILY EXTRACTED FROM THE FTDNA DATA.
If you would like to join the Wilson Surname DNA Project, and if you do not already have results from Family Tree DNA or another testing firm, please click here to go to the project master page at Family Tree DNA. Tests may be ordered from that page. If you have questions about which DNA test is appropriate, contact Project Administrator David Wilson. If results have already been reported to you from any firm and you would like to affiliate with the project, that is also possible. Please contact the project administrator.
Project Founder: Steven J. Zuraff.
DISPLAY OF EXTENDED RESULTS: Until a web site redesign is complete, results for markers 38-67 can be seen on the bare-bones Wilson Project web site at Family Tree DNA: click here and then click on the Y-Results button.

Table Notes |
Red column heads denote those DYS locations which have been observed to mutate more frequently. |
|
Blue kit numbers indicate markers whose haplogroup has been determined by SNP test (see below.) |
|
Occasionally more than four copies of DYS464 are found; two Wilsons show these extra copies |
|
Haplotypes that appear to be identical (indicating close relationship) appear in adjacent gray-shaded rows. |
|
A green-shaded modal haplotype composed of the most common marker values for some haplotypes is included for comparison. |
|
Numerical record numbers come from Family Tree DNA. Records with the N prefix come from the Genographic Project. Records with a Z prefix were tested by other labs. Records with mixed alphanumeric characters (like GMBDE or FCTQ9) are imported from public databases like Ysearch and Ybase. |

R1b1c (Formerly called R1b and R1b1); 6476, 4799, 68981, 74608, 74293, 96584, N51030 and N55995 are SNP-tested R1b1c; other SNP-tested individuals are R1b1 but are sure to be R1b1c as well |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
It is probable that some of the haplotypes in this section, if SNP tested, would be found to belong to haplogroup R1b1c9. They have not been moved because the evidence of the allele values is not as strong as it was for those that were relocated. |

R1b1c9 -- Including the "Anglo-Saxon" Variety of R1b1c |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Up to one quarter of Wilsons classified as R1b1c may belong to this subgroup, whose genetic markers suggest descent from the Angles and Saxons who entered the British Isles from north central Europe in the fifth and sixth centuries. (Earlier entry during the Neolithic period is also possible.) Haplotypes are provisionally assigned to this cluster based on correlation between marker values and SNP tests of individuals not in the Wilson project. Allowing for minor variation, any haplotype with DYS390=23, DYS442=13, DYS447=24 and DYS464=15-16-17-18 is grouped here. Also included here is anyone with DYS492=13 (this is marker 66 in 67-marker haplotypes). Short haplotypes have been included here if they are exact matches for the corresponding portions of longer haplotypes that meet the tests. (43759 and 67966 were SNP tested R1b1c, but were not tested for the R1b1c9 SNP.) |

HAPLOGROUP ASSIGNMENTS AND SNP TESTING : The individual haplogroup assignments in the table reflect correlations between the project participant's haplotype and similar haplotypes in a research data base. Additional DNA tests are required to confirm or disprove the provisional haplogroup assignment. If a project participant's haplogroup has been directly determined by single nucleotide polymorphism evaluation (SNP test), the kit number appears in bold blue. SNP tests are of little or no use in sorting out recent family history. They are extremely useful to individuals who wish to determine their deeper genetic roots and the geographical areas in which their patrilineal ancestors flourished several thousand years ago.
The subdivisions of haplogroup I in the table go beyond what was initially proposed by FTDNA. With the exception of participants 24051 and 26192 (provisionally assigned to I1b), FTDNA assigned all these haplotypes to the undifferentiated haplogroup I. The additional distinctions in the table above are based on emerging academic consensus that the value 8 at DYS455 indicates membership in haplogroup I1a or its subclade I1a1. Participants 2676 and N3456, whose SNP tests put them firmly in Haplogroup I, probably belong in subclade I1c on statistical and comparative grounds. But at this moment tests have confirmed membership only in the undivided haplogroup I.
Some members of haplogroup R1b1c have been SNP tested to subclade R1b1, and one member (47991) has been SNP tested to subclade R1b1c. Another (8999) has been SNP tested and found to belong to a further subclade, R1b1c7. Until recent genotyping analysis refined the picture of this branch of the human Y-Tree, it was labeled haplogroup R1b, a term still found in many web sites and publications. It is a virtual certainty that all haplotypes posted under the R1b heading in fact belong to haplgroup R1b1c. Further differentiation is possible, and the table of results is being modified to reflect those distinctions as evidence warrants.
Refinement SNP testing of participants 2918 and 6599 has clarified the position in the phylogenetic tree of the unusual haplotype they share. After several tests that produced inconclusive or inconsistent results, it is now clear that both (as well as a third Wilson) belong to haplogroup R1b1c.
The haplogroup designations are those established by the Y Chromosome Consortium (YCC) in 2002 and revised by Family Tree DNA in 2005.Click here to see a diagram of haplogroup relationships published by Family Tree DNA. The image is unfortunately of low resolution and the specific markers that identify each haplogroup and subclade are almost illegible. A recent cooperative project by the International Society of Genetic Genealogists has brought the tree up to date for 2006. Click here to access the ISOGG tree, which is a hyperlink-driven web site rather than a static image.
HAPLOGROUP DEFINITIONS: The following thumbnail summaries of different haplogroups are based in descriptions provided by Family Tree DNA. In some cases the descriptions have bee modified to include information and conclusions that became available only recently.
E3a |
Haplogroup E3a is an African lineage. It is currently hypothesized that this haplogroup dispersed south from northern Africa within the last 3,000 years in association with the Bantu agricultural expansion. E3a is also the most common lineage among African Americans. |
E3b |
This haplogroup is believed to have evolved in the Middle East. It expanded into the Mediterranean during the Pleistocene Neolithic expansion. It is currently distributed around the Mediterranean, southern Europe, and in north and east Africa. |
G |
This lineage may have originated in India or Pakistan, and has dispersed into central Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The G2 branch of this lineage (containing the P15 mutation) is found most often in the Europe and the Middle East. |
I |
The I, I1, and I1a lineages are nearly completely restricted to northwestern Europe. These would most likely have been common within Viking populations. One lineage of this group extends down into central Europe. |
I1b |
This subgroup of Haplogroup I is found within the Balkan countries at its greatest frequency and diversity. These countries probably harbored this subset of Haplogroup I as a refuge during the Last Glacial Maximum. |
I1b2 |
[Undescribed by FTDNA, but similar to I, I1 and I1a based on research by others. A continental population can be distinguished from a British Isles population.] |
J1 |
Haplogroup J is found at highest frequencies in Middle Eastern and north African populations where it most likely evolved. This marker has been carried by Middle Eastern traders into Europe, central Asia, India, and Pakistan. |
J2 |
This lineage originated in the northern portion of the Fertile Crescent where it later spread throughout central Asia, the Mediterranean, and south into India. As with other populations with Mediterranean ancestry this lineage is found within Jewish populations. |
Q |
The Q lineage is the lineage that links Asia and the Americas. This lineage is found in North and Central Asian populations as well as native Americans. This lineage is believed to have originated in Central Asia and migrated through the Altai / Baikal region of northern Eurasia into the Americas. Q is also found today in Scandinavia and other Northern European areas. A significant portion of the Native American population belongs to subhaplogroup Q3, which is not found in Europe. |
R1a |
The R1a lineage is believed to have originated in the Eurasian Steppes north of the Black and Caspian Seas. This lineage is believed to have originated in a population of the Kurgan culture, known for the domestication of the horse (approximately 5000 years ago). These people were also believed to be the first speakers of the Indo-European language group. This lineage is currently found in central and western Asia, India, and in Slavic populations of Eastern Europe. |
R1b1c |
Haplogroup R1b1c (which throughout most of Europe is identical with the more inclusive haplogroups R1b1 and R1b) is the most common haplogroup found in European populations. It is believed to have expanded throughout Europe as humans re-colonized after the last glacial maximum 10-12 thousand years ago. This haplogroup contains the Atlantic Modal Haplotype. Independent research has begun to reveal distinctions within this group that will permit deep historical distinctions. Currently recognized varieties include Basque and Iberian subgroups, isolated Irish and Scottish varieties, and a variety found in both the British Isles and northern Germany that can perhaps be connected with the Angles and Saxons who entered Britain 1500 years ago after the collapse of the Roman administrative authority. (An alternative explanation is that this group entered the land that would become the British Isles some 5,000 years earlier.) The Anglo-Saxon group is now labeled R1b1c9, though specialized testing shows that the R1b1c9 cluster includes more than just the Anglo-Saxon descendants. The NW Irish variety has also been identified in an academic study by Trinity College Dublin and in March of 2006 was demonstrated to be equivalent to haplogroup R1b1c7. Another subhaplogroup, R1b1c10, is known to exist, but members cannot be confidently assigned without a SNP test. |
Any two members of a haplogroup or subclade—even those with different surnames—will share a more recent common ancestor than either one of them will share with a member of a different haplogroup. For example, a Wilson in Haplogroup R1b1c will share a more recent common ancestor with any other R1b1c, no matter what his surname, than he will share with a Wilson who is a member of Haplogroup I.

David Wilson, born 30 January 1774, probably in Virginia (1850 census). In the
1880 census, his son Hugh says that David was born in Ireland, which perhaps
indicates "Irish descent." Its more likely that David's father was born in
Ireland. David married Jane Weir (Wear) in Greene County, TN on 16 October

David Wilson, Jr. David was likely born in Augusta County, VA (speculation).
Early land purchases in Borden's grant show three parcels of land owned by
William Wilson, James Wilson and John Wilson (2). David was Presbyterian, being
an Elder in the Mars Hill Presbyterian Church at Athens, TN. Jane died in Meigs
County, Tennessee, September 1846. David died in Meigs County in December
